These are my words in reply to you concerning the notice that was published on the 16th day of August 1873.
The words of that notice state that I am responsible for the court's troubles and why the commissioners' court failed to convene. My friend, I say to you that it is those very commissioners who bear responsibility for the troubles that prevented their business from proceeding.
1: You should understand that word has reached us from the great body of the people that the court should be abandoned and Parliament's work should cease, yet those commissioners persist in demanding that the court continue to sit.
2: Word emerged from those commissioners that Maori rangatira should reverse their position regarding the court - whether in opposition or support - but the Maori will resist again, and those courts will again insist that the court reconvene for subsequent hearings.
3: When called before the court, I rose to present my views before the bench, but those commissioners would not consent and continued to insist that the court should sit again at the request of individual petitioners. Friend, you are aware of these matters...
