To Henare and his Pakeha. Greetings to you all. This land is being given into your hands/authority, namely Wharerangi, but there remains a rent arrangement. The term of that rent is twenty 21 years. The payment for that rent is £260 pounds from the year 1867. Those monies are divided: one hundred and sixty 160 pounds for our debt, leaving for the rent one hundred pounds. It has been five years that this money has not come to us. The reason this money was held back is that it is said to be our debt. However my debt/credit are: four tons wire, two barrels of rum, two blankets.

Moreover, friend Henare, you should inquire of me and I will explain it clearly to you. There are four of us who are people of the Crown grant.

To Henare Matua, greetings to you, friend.
This land I am giving to you, that is, into your hands/authority, namely Te Pahou.
My debts/credit are: six stones, three barrels of liquor, seven pounds of tobacco, three blankets, two pieces of printed fabric, five shirts.
The money for me is one hundred £100 pounds, which has simply been promised but not given to me. That money is something arranged for me.
From Paora Torotoro
Moreover, friend, you should inquire of me.
