This lease was made on the tenth day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and seventy, by Aperahama Tipae, Te Wunu Te Rangiwerohia, Matene Te Matuku, Mohi Mahi, Reihana Te Rekuku, Amiria Pateriki, Karena Te Manaotawhaki, and Ihakara Rangiahua of Whangaehu in the Province of Wellington in the Colony of New Zealand, on behalf of the children of Rititi of Whangaehu also because an official document has been issued after the Maori Land Court judgment to these Maori people whose names have been written above, they are now leasing to Rititi's children, a part of the land block known by the name of Rakautaua by the Whangaehu River. The area being leased, known after surveying, is two thousand one hundred and sixty acres (2160). The full agreement is shown on the map attached here, with boundaries for the Maori [owners] in some parts that are appropriate for horses, cattle, and pigs to go on the leased area and until the time that the Maori sections are fenced. All trees growing on said land, small and large, belong to the Maori owners exclusively. One acre is given to the Pakeha for firewood for them, for the Pakeha for fencing only, to be taken from the area close to the area being fenced. This lease begins on the first of March 1, 1870, the March of the year one thousand eight hundred and seventy, paying each year for the passing/elapsed years two hundred and forty pounds (£240.0.0) for eight years, and afterward each year £300.0.0

payable at the beginning of each year. The initial payment must be made at the time when the names are affixed to this Lease. The taxes and all Government demands for road construction or whatever else are for the Pakeha leasing this land to pay. These Pakeha fully agree to give, they or their descendants, the money for the rent at the times agreed to. If twenty-one days pass after the appointed time for payment of rent, the owners of this land shall have the right to re-enter upon it, this lease shall become void, and all things upon the land shall revert to the Maori owners without any compensation being payable to the Pakeha. These Pakeha also agree to protect the eel weirs, not to dig for water drainage lest the eel ponds dry up. The areas reserved for the Maori, if fenced, a portion for the Maori and a portion for the Pakeha.
