March 9, 1874
To Henare Matua my friend, greetings to you and your entire household. May your years be extended in longevity. May God protect you, and us too, and all the people. That concludes the salutations. My friend, your letter of invitation to us has arrived on the seventh day of March, informing us that on the 10th day of this month there will be a meeting at Pakohai. Therefore we said your arrangement is flawed. I know you are imposing requirements on us without proper consideration in expecting us to attend that meeting. We are very sorry that we cannot attend that meeting. Don't unnecessarily seek out a reason for our non-attendance. The fact is that the notice is too short. If the weather had been calm, we would have traveled by boat on the 9th day, but we have been overtaken by bad weather and cannot attend.

1: Given that we cannot attend, please send us a letter describing the discussions of that meeting so that we, these committees, can be informed and [we can] forward it to the committees of the East Coast.
