January 24, 1873
This is a land petition letter from us to the chairman of the Commissioners.
Friend, greetings to you. These are words from us to you about our land that was sold by certain people – by Te Hapuku, Hoani Waikato and Patukaikino. The name of that land is Kaiuru, land that is part of Waipaoa. We want to use that land.
These are the boundaries of that place.
Starting at Kaiuru to the junction, continuing to Kaiwaha, to Mangahohonu, continuing to the summit of Piriwhare, to Waihoroi Kumara, continuing to the fork Mangahohonu, to the marsh of Tainui, continuing Kauru o Mangahauto. The messenger within the river turns back, continuing along Nga Kirikiri a Tahuna, reching Waipaoa, turning and continuing along the feeding stream of Arahunahuna, reaching the Kahikatea tree, to Kaiuru meeting at the starting point.
These are the boundaries of that land, and we ask that the commissioners work on this as we did not sell that land. We are the people that own that land. This land was sold previously before the land was given by the chief landowners. We were children at the time of the sale when the land was taken. So, friends, greetings to you all.
