In Porangahau, she was best known for her exceptional golfing skills and her dedication to promoting and fostering the sport within the local community. A member of the Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau, and Porangahau golf clubs, Mona's legacy lives on through the Mona Hunter Memorial Cup, first contested in 1959. This competition, still played annually between the Napier, Hastings, and Waipukurau clubs, is the longest-running women's golf competition in the region. During times of labour shortages, Mona and her husband Jim also played a vital role by bringing in workers from Rarotonga to assist with local needs.
