When the war began, Eileen served as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) member in Rotorua. In her spare time, she dedicated herself to packing Red Cross parcels and knitting garments for soldiers overseas. Eileen was also an active member of both the Porangahau Anglican Guild and the Red Cross, where she worked alongside Mrs. Margaret Hope, also contributing to efforts at Porangahau School.
