To Henry Russell, Karaitiana, and Wi Parata,
Greetings to you, dear friends. May you dwell in well-being, may your lives be lengthened, and may the grace of God protect and uphold you. Thus concludes our words of greeting.
Friends, we have now heard that Fox and McLean have fallen, along with Ormond. This outcome follows the sustained prayers and efforts of all the committees of the Hawke's Bay Province and other iwi, who opposed the wrongdoing carried out under their government.
Yet now, we hear that these same men seek once more to rise and form a government, intending again to impose policies upon Maori across this island.
Therefore, friends, we now reaffirm our stance of total opposition to their return. You must convey this word to the committee so it may be known: We, the Maori committees of this Province and other iwi, absolutely refuse to recognise these individuals as government. Absolutely not. Should they return to power, their laws shall hold no authority over the Maori committees and other iwi of this Province mentioned above. Absolutely not. This rejection is founded upon the grave injustices we have witnessed here under their rule, injustices that shall be set out for you to examine fully.

In Governor Grey's time, when McLean served as Land Purchase Commissioner, many wrongs were committed against our lands. These wrongdoings remain fresh in our memories:
Firstly, Wero - land reserved for Maori - was taken from us despite that protection.
Secondly, Tautane and Te Wainui - these lands were seized, with the purchase money given wrongly to others.
Thirdly, Te Umuopua - taken by deceit, then divided, with one part supposedly returned through Whenuahou, only for that too to be seized again. This dispute remains unresolved.
Fourthly, Marutairi - this land remains in dispute even today.
Fifthly, Nga Paeruru - this land, too, was stolen.
