To Henare Matua - friend, greetings. May you and your household remain well, and may your years be lengthened in good health. May God watch over us all. And now, I close these words of greeting. Friend, this is my first reply to your letters. The second letter from you has now reached me. And so, I write with a message concerning Mr McLean, which was spoken to Ihaka and to the assembled chiefs of Ngati Kahungunu - the word extended even unto Turanga and Ngati Porou. That Pakeha seeks the downfall of our Maori committees, for he considers this work to be bound up with the Hauhau faith. I am the one he holds in resentment, for it was I who brought you to Wairoa, and from there to Turanga. Yet I have observed that McLean moves from settlement to settlement, seeking out those who will follow him. He has heard of the money raised by the people of Wairoa, Mohaka, Nuhaka, and Nukutaurua to establish a printing press. McLean has called it wasteful - he has said that such spending will bring us to ruin. It was at McLean's urging that Ihaka and Hori Pomana agreed the fund should be dismantled. When Ihaka came to Nuhaka, and we went also, he commanded that I and all the committees should do away with it. I replied plainly: I do not agree - and neither does the committee. For that money belongs not to me, nor to you, Hori. It belongs to the old women, the children, and the elders of our people. Therefore, let the fund remain as the people intend it. As to that money, Maraki shall give it over to you. Now I turn to your most recent letter. The people as a whole, and the committees alike, have received your word and abided by it. There is but one response

I shall give: all the tribes have consented to your invitation to come to Pakohai. The decision rests with you now. And another matter I must speak of, friend. Your recent journey was unwise. You have seen how the north wind shakes the houses - so too has Wairoa been unsettled, the house of Tauira. And thus I conclude my words to you.
