Friend, this is about the piece of land that Karepa and I sold at Rangitirohia, which Te Omana purchased. The ten Crown Grant holders sold it in exchange for an iron plough, a case of rum, two dozen bags of flour, a case of tobacco, a roll of wire, and one hundred and fifty pounds in notes (£150). The leader of the Crown Grant was offered rum and given thirteen pounds (£13.0.0) as payment to sign his name while he was drunk. When the land was taken, we did not receive a single document in return, which is why we are both

That property was obtained through dishonest means. I've been informed of your upcoming visit, so this letter will provide you with details about the situation. Should you be unable to visit, kindly send me a reply by post. Also, please inform those who are travelling to Te Wairoa. Kindly inform me of your decision regarding the visit so I may be prepared. Note that this is the second time I've written to you, yet I have received no word in return.
